Born on 20 December 1925 in Alor Setar, the capital of the state of Kedah, Tun Dr.Mahathir did his early and secondary education in his home town. In 1947, he gained admission into king Edward VII College of medicine in Singapore. Upon graduation, he joined the Malaysian government service as Medical Officer. He left in 1957 to set up his own practice in Alor Setar. Tun Dr Mahathir has been active in politics since 1945. He has been a member of the United Malays National Organisation(UMNO) since its inception in 1946.

He was first elected as a Member of Parliament following the General Election in 1964. However, he lost his seat in the subsequent General Election 1969. Owing to his keep interest in the country’s education, he was appointed Chairman of the first Higher Education Advisory council in 1972, member of the University Court and University of Malaya Council, and chairman of the National University Council in 1974.

In 1973, Tun Dr Mahathir was appointed a Senator. He relinquished this post in order to contest in 1974 General Election where he was returned unpossed. Following the election, Tun Dr Mahathir was appoint to the Minister of Education. In 1976, Tun Dr Mahathir was made Deputy Prime Minister in addition to his Educatio Portfolio. In a Cabinet reshuffle two years later, he religuished the Education portfolio for that of Trade and industry. As Minister of Trade and Industry, he led several investment promotion missions overseas. Tun Dr Mahathir was elected as one of the three Vice Presidents of UMNO in 1975. In 1978, he won the Deputy President seat and in 1981, he was appointed President of the party. He was returned unopposed as President in 1984. In the 1987 party elections, Tun Dr Mahathir defeated his challenger to retain the Presidency and in 1990 and 1993, he was again returned unopposed as a party President. Under his leadership, the ruling party Barisan Nasional(National Front) won landslide victories in the 1982, 1986, 1990, 1995 and 1999 General Elections.

Tun Dr Mahathir is married to  doctor, Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah bt Mohd Ali, and they have seven children Marina, Mirzan, Melinda, Mokhzani, Mukhriz, Maizura and Mazhar. Tun Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad became the fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia on 16 July 1981 and stepped down as Prime Minister on October 31st 2003. Writing is one of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s passions. He started writing while in school. In the 1940s and ‘50s, under the pen name “Che Det”, he actively wrote articles on Malay politics and economic issues, which were published in The Sunday Times. He continued writing throughout his career, and one of his most famous treatises, The Malay Dilemma (1970), influenced policy and policy makers in the aftermath of the 1969 racial riots.

Tun Dr Mahathir is also an avid horse and enjoys reading fiction. “I read a lot of novels, stories written by well-known authors like Wilbur Smith and Ken Follet. It’s a way of avoiding heavy books”. The idea of an international Islamic education institution was first conceived in 1982 by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad during a special meeting between OIC leaders to establish an international institution for tertiary education based on Islamic principles, known as the Islamization of knowledge. It was then shared with the then Minister of Education, Dato’ Amar Dr. Sulaiman Daud; the Director-General of Education, Tan Sri Dato’ Hj Murad bin Mohd. Nor and two other person. ASSOC. Prof.Dr.Kamal bin hassan,then of the National University of Malaysia, a senior academic official who attended the meeting, was entrusted with preparing the first working paper on the concept of the university.

IIUM was officially established on 23 may 1983 when the University received its ‘Established Order’ from His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-musta’in billah, after an exchange of Diplomatic Notes of co-sponsership between the Government of Malaysia and number of Muslim Goverments as well as the OIC. On 1 July 1983, Ahmad shah was appointed as the first Constitutional head of IIUM.



He was born in Pasir Mas, Kelantan in 1942. Married and has five off-springs. He graduated from University of Malaya with B.A. Honours(1st class) in 1966. He served briefly in the Malayan Civil Service in the State Secretariat of Ipoh. Later he resigned to become a tutor in University Malaya for two years(1966-1968). He left for U.S.A on Fulbright Scholarship in 1968. He obtained M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. from Columbia University, New York in 1970, 1972, and 1975 respectively. He received Columbia University’s President’s Fellowships for four years. He conducted field work in Indonesia in 1973 on Ford Foundation Scholarship. His area of specialization and interest; Contemporary Islamic Thought, particularly pertaining to Southeast Asia region. He has published five books and more than hundred articles over the last three decades. The Ministry of Awqaf of Kuwai ha published on Arabic book 2009 containing a collection of his articles. He was co-editor of the volume on Religions and beliefs, the Encyclopaedia of Malaysia, published by Editions Didier Millet in Kuala Lumpur 2005.

He served as lecture, Associate Professor and Head of Department of Usuluddin and Philosophy in University Kebangsaan Malaysia from 1976 untill 1986. He has been promoted as Professor in 1986 while seconded to the International Islamic University Malaysia(IIUM). Seconded to IIUM in 1983 and serve as Professor and Shaikh al-Kulliyah of Centre for Fundamental knowledge until 1989. Appointed as founding Dean of the new Faculty of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences, IIUM in 1989. Promoted as Deputy Rector (Academic Affair), IIUM, from 1990-1999. Promoted on 4th April 2006. Appointed as a member of the Board International Scholars of The Naif Foundation of Saudi Arabia from 2006-2009 to finalise the choice of recipient’s for annual award of Naif Prize in Research on Islamic Religious issues. Appointed by Malaysian government as Malaysia’s sole representative on the Organization of Islamic Conference (O.I.C) Commission of Eminent Persons from 2004-2005 to recommend the reforms and transformation of the O.I.C. Appointed as Chair of Ibn Khaldun for two years from 15th August 2008. Sits on several editorial  and advisory boards of  local as well as international journals, such as the Journal of Islamic Studies of Oxford University; Islamic Studies of Islamic Research Institute, Islamabad: Islaamiyyat al-ma’rifah of Jordan and Afkar, Journal of Islamic Though University of Malaya.

He was on contract as full-time Professor in Department of Usuluddin and Comparative Religion, Faculty of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences, IIUM until 1st February 2011,when he was  transferred to the institute  of Islamic Though and Civilisation,IIUM.

Promoted to the post of Distinguished Professor by the Ministry of Higher Education on December 15,2010. As chairman of the Steering Committee, he is currently preparing for the holding of the First World Congress on Islamicisation and integration. He also the Chairman of the Research Unit of Islamicisation of Human Knownledge in IIUM. His Reaseach Unit is also available for domestic and international consultantcy on Spiritual Key Performance Indicators, Islamicised Eduaction and Islamic Worldview Impact in Management and Governance.

History, Tan Sri Haji Bin Haji Omar joined the Police Force on 15th Dcember 1971 as Probationary Inspector and there after served as Criminal Investigation Officer at Seremban, Kuala Pilah and Kerian, Perak. I Taiping he held a post of the Traffic investigation officer. He was the Officer In-Charge of Seberang Perai Police District and Officer In-Charge of Courts in Ipoh.
